“A girl with red fingernails, as if she were a doll, has a big dandelion in front of her mouth, the wild flower reminding us of the childhood games. In Tuscany, one makes a wish before blowing its seeds off; if the flower's seeds are blown away completely with one blow, then the wish would come true. The idea is that of Vanitas, of ephemeral, of the absolute transient nature of the existence.
Four images plus one representing a doll worn out after a long stay in water, washed out on a beach, constitute the subject of Disappearance (2011), a work specifically created for the exhibition by Francesca Es (1979). The red detail, as in her other works, is the call to existence, to blood, to life and therefore to death. The atmosphere that is created is unnatural; it all seems designed to look purposely artificial. From one moment to another, one might be facing the emptiness (void). That void can be found in Francesca Es' studio, which is predominantly white, the colour of mourning for the Orientals, where everyone is given the possibility of getting lost.”
